A Theatre Workshop to Explore Science, Technology, and Society
I have long been passionate about integrating theatre into STEM education. My dream has been to create a STEAM school where theatre is incorporated as the central art form, bridging the gap between scientific inquiry and creative expression. Today, I’m thrilled to announce a new chapter in this journey, one that brings my vision one step closer to reality.
This October, I will be launching a year-long theatre workshop at THESPIS Theater in Astoria, NY, titled “Exploring Science, Technology, and Society through Theatre.” This workshop is designed to use the power of performance to delve into the complex interplay between scientific and technological progress and the societal implications of these advances.
Why This Workshop Matters
For years, I have worked to bring theatrical elements into STEM classrooms. Now, I’m flipping the script by bringing science, technology, and societal issues onto the stage, creating a unique space for dialogue, critical thinking, and creativity.
This workshop embodies the essence of what I envision for a STEAM-centered education:
· Interdisciplinary Learning: Participants explore how scientific advancements shape not only our understanding of the natural and social worlds but also how society influences the direction of research and innovation.
· Ethical Engagement: Through performance, we will tackle the moral dilemmas posed by emerging technologies, encouraging students to think deeply about the responsibilities that come with scientific progress.
· Creative Communication: Theatre provides a powerful medium to make complex scientific concepts accessible and engaging to a broader audience.
· Collaborative Creation: Students will work together to adapt existing plays or develop original pieces, enhancing creative teamwork and collective problem-solving skills.
Workshop Details
The program runs every Wednesday evening from October to June, culminating in public performances. It’s open to high school students and young adults up to twenty-five years old, creating a diverse group of learners and creators.
Throughout the year, participants will:
· Adapt existing works or develop original pieces
· Engage in team-building activities, acting exercises, and improvisations
· Explore various aspects of theatre production, from writing to directing to designing costumes and sets
My Role and Approach
As the instructor, I’m excited to bring my background in theatre direction, science education, and philosophy of science to this unique setting. My approach is rooted in the ancient Greek tradition of using theatre to deal with society’s most pressing questions. By blending this classical foundation with contemporary issues in science and technology, we will create a truly innovative learning experience.
Looking Ahead
This workshop represents a significant step towards my dream of a STEAM-centered educational model. It’s a chance to demonstrate how theatre can serve as central in interdisciplinary learning, fostering not just knowledge, but wisdom, creativity, and social responsibility.
I invite you to follow along on this journey. Whether you are a student interested in participating, an educator curious about this approach, or simply someone passionate about the intersection of arts and sciences, I will be sharing updates and insights throughout the year.
Here’s to a year of exploration, creativity, and transformative theatre-making!
